There’s just something about the changing of seasons that makes us want to break out of our familiar beauty ruts. Fall is here and what better way to mark this ceremonial shift of time than with a fresh hairstyle, cut, or hair color. Sure, you could go with something seasonally appropriate, but it’s 2024, and hard-and-fast rules no longer exist. If you can wear white after Labor Day, you can definitely get highlights in autumn.

So to help inform your next salon visit, we’ve been hard at work gathering inspo from the hair trends that have been gracing the runways and streets all year long—from curtain bangs to choppy shags to beverage-inspired dye jobs. Keep scrolling for 12 wear-whenever hair trends to try ASAP.

About the Expert:
Cassandra Olivia is a Delaware-based hairstylist and colorist.

1. Cowboy Copper

If there’s one hair trend that dominated our feeds and FYPs this year, it was this casual take on copper hair color. Because it uses your natural undertone as its base, cowboy copper makes for an easy, chic transition for just about any hair color. It’s vibrant, but not too in your face. But remember that red hues can fade fast, so if you opt for this color, plan for touch-ups, or have your colorist recommend a color-depositing mask to help keep your copper vibrant between appointments.

2. California Highlights

You don’t have to live in the Golden State to rock year-round blonde hair. In fact, we think this West Coast approach to face-framing highlights gives the perfect back-from-vacation effect that is truly seasonless—as evidenced by hairstylist Travis Ogletree’s sun-kissed looks. California highlights are laid-back and offer low-maintenance growth. To get the ultimate beachy-chic style, air-dry your hair and keep a good texture spray on hand (we love AMIKA Un.Done Volume and Matte Texture Spray).

3. Bouncy French Lob

The best hair cut is one that has you leaving the salon feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world. For those with long hair, a shoulder-length chop that’s full of movement (like this bouncy French lob) can feel utterly transformative. Popular in Paris, the French lob is equal parts chic and unbothered—which is truly the Parisian way. To get maximum bounce, use a curling iron on the ends of your lob and gently brush the curls out to add fullness. Then, apply a small amount of a glossy hair serum like DESIGN.ME HAIR’s Gloss.Me to add lightweight shine.

4. Deep Side Parts

No matter where you land on the generational battle between middle parts and side parts (for the record, we love both equally), dramatic side parts are making their case loud and clear this year. To get the perfect side part proportions, draw an invisible line from the arch of your eyebrow up to the hairline—this is where you’ll draw your part. Pull your hair over to the opposite side of the part side for effortless old-Hollywood glam.

5. Freestyle Braids

While they may be currently trending on TikTok, freestyle braids are timeless—with roots in ancient West African symbolism. This personalized take on cornrows offers endless ways to express yourself and your unique style. They’re also highly customizable. Show off shapes like dainty swirls or geometric patterns, play with length (like ultra-long braids or half-up rows), or incorporate pops of color.

6. Mid-Length “Butterfly” Layers

The ’90s continue to call us in new ways. Similar to the iconic “Rachel” cut, the butterfly cut is an updated version that features face-framing pieces, short to mid-length layers, and tons of movement. Wispy layers contour the cheekbones and cascade downwards to create the effect of butterfly wings. It can be a great hairstyle for those with thin hair who want the volume of a short cut without sacrificing length.

 7. The ’90s Blunt Bob

This revived haircut trend showcases a dynamic fusion of the iconic ’90s bob haircut with a modern update, featuring more movement through choppy layers and stylish bangs. "The signature edge of the blunt-cut ends exudes a cool-girl vibe, while the layers add an approachable dimension to the overall look," says Delaware-based hairstylist Cassandra Olivia. And styling is an essential aspect of this short hairstyle. "The trick lies in the commitment to blow-drying your hair regularly, especially after washing or exposure to moisture. For optimal care and to combat potential damage from frequent styling, consider integrating a blow-drying treatment into your routine. We love the soft, smooth, and luscious look we get from AVANT SKINCARE Reconstructing Keratin Complex Ultra Shine Hair Cream

  8. The Supermodel Blowout

This look is all about creating a balance between shine and volume, and adding long layers to frame your face can give it a fresh twist. To achieve the perfect supermodel-esque blowout, start with a volumizer before the blowout process to help plump up your hair, giving it a noticeable boost in fullness and body throughout. "For added volume, use a round brush and a blow dryer to lift the roots of your hair away from the scalp while drying," says Olivia. If you want to add more movement, try adding a wave or curl to the front layers of your hair.

9. Embracing Your Natural Texture

Let's be honest: The trend of flaunting your natural hair texture is thriving and here to stay. Whether you have coils, curls, waves, or naturally straight hair, a movement is underway to celebrate all different kinds of hair textures. However, maintaining the coily and curly hair of your dreams is all about the optimal moisture and slip with your hair products. If you need a quick hydration fix, try incorporating a curl-friendly hair mask like TWISTED SISTA 3-Minute Moisturizing Mask into your hair routine.

10. Bold Color Blocking

"While natural, more ‘lived-in’ shades are always popular, many people are now opting for something a bit more daring to add a touch of excitement to their style," says Olivia. This style involves using daring colors like bright orange, blues, and purples throughout the entire head or in face-framing color blocks. If you're considering trying out bold color blocking, it's important to do your research and gather photos of the look you want before booking an appointment. This will give your colorist a clear idea of what you're after and help them recommend the best color options for you based on your skin tone and desired maintenance level.

11. The Wolf Cut

Behold the style that's making its way back into our hearts. The iconic wolf cut hairstyle features a shaggy and layered cut, which gives off a wild and untamed vibe. It’s perfect for those who want to add some boldness and texture to their hair without sacrificing the length. The key to achieving this hairstyle is to keep the layers long and choppy, with the ends left slightly uneven for a natural and effortless look. Once you lock in the look that you desire, you can style this cut in many different ways. For a casual look, apply some texturizing spray (we love R+CO Trophy Shine + Texture Spray) or mousse to damp hair and scrunch it with your hands.

 12. Eye-Catching Wispy Bangs

Wispy bangs involve cutting the hair in the front into light, airy layers that frame the face. The trend can be worn in various lengths, from short and choppy to long and flowing. To get the perfect fringe, working with a skilled hairstylist is important to help you find the right length for your face shape and hair type (whether you have thin hair or thick hair). Lastly, consider using styling tools like a flat iron or a curling wand to add volume and texture to your wispy bangs. With the right approach, you can be sure to achieve a chic look that will turn heads all year.
